Packaging material and equipment distributor Chang Wha Electromaterials (CWE) has announced it will start LED packaging operations, and that it will also form a joint venture with flexible copper clad laminate (FCCL) maker ThinFlex for the development and manufacture of materials for LED packaging.

In a filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) on October 31, Chang Wha said as it has over 20 years experience in the semiconductor packaging sector, it has decided to enter the LED packaging business. It said LED will be an important component for the panel industry in the future.

The company said it does not expect the new business to come into conflict with its existing clients from the semiconductor packaging sector. The company did not provide a time-frame for the beginning of the LED packaging business.

In a separate filing, Chang Wha said it will invest a maximum of NT$50 million (US$1.54 million) to take no less than 20% in the joint venture with ThinFlex.
